Spirit Airlines is not your typical full-service airline, as everyone who has ever been on the airline knows. Additionally, if you have ever flown through San Diego International Airport (SAN), you are aware that it is a smaller, more orderly airport with a distinct charm. This is how my recent flight on Spirit Airlines from Spirit Airlines SAN Terminal went, from check-in to takeoff. It was shockingly easy.
Arrival at SAN — Terminal 1
San Diego International Airport’s Terminal 1 is home to Spirit Airlines. Terminal 1 is still operational and user-friendly despite its age. As is frequently the case with ultra-low-cost airlines, I arrived a few hours early for my morning departure, anticipating long queues and some mayhem. Rather, I discovered a well-structured terminal with signage that sent Spirit travelers in the direction of the right check-in desks.
Despite not being as roomy or well-designed as Terminal 2, Terminal 1 has been undergoing redevelopment, and I was pleased by how smoothly everything ran. There weren’t many people at the terminal, and employees were positioned close by to answer inquiries.
Check-In and Baggage
I had paid for one carry-on when I checked in online the night before because Spirit is notorious for its à la carte price structure. I printed my boarding card and luggage tag at one of the self-service kiosks at the airport before dropping off my carry-on at the bag drop. Unlike the horrible stories I had heard online, the Spirit staff was kind and effective.
Although I did see several passengers becoming irate over last-minute fines and baggage costs, Spirit’s regulations are clear if you take the time to read the tiny print in advance. Since I plan ahead and travel light, I didn’t run into any unexpected costs.
Security Screening
SAN Terminal 1’s security screening is inconsistent depending on the time of day. The TSA line moved swiftly for my early morning trip. The entire process took less than 20 minutes, and agents were there to answer questions. Although my TSA PreCheck expedited the process, even the standard line appeared to be manageable.
The serene, welcoming ambiance was one aspect of this section of the airport that I valued. Security checks don’t often feel hurried or anxious, but this one didn’t.
Terminal Amenities and Waiting
Although Terminal 1 doesn’t offer many upscale amenities, it does contain convenience stores, basic dining options, and restrooms. I stopped into a little café next to my gate for a coffee and a breakfast sandwich. There were plenty of power outlets for charging gadgets, and the seating was sparse but sufficient.
I observed that Spirit’s gate agents were actively sharing information regarding boarding groups, schedules, and passenger requirements while I was waiting to board. When traveling on a low-cost airline, that degree of communication is really beneficial.
Boarding Process
The boarding was punctual and well-organized. Announcements were unambiguous, and spirit boards were numbered. The baggage regulations were enforced by the workers without being unduly severe or combative. The procedure proceeded swiftly, and passengers with large carry-ons were requested to gate-check them.
The extra legroom that came with my exit row seat was well worth the money. During my three-hour flight, the minor improvement made a significant impact because Spirit’s standard seats are constricted and do not recline.
In-Flight Experience
Because of Spirit’s minimalist business approach, you shouldn’t anticipate free Wi-Fi or refreshments. There is hardly much cushioning on the seats, and the tray tables are small. But I was aware of what I was getting into. The flight attendants were professional, amiable, and made a few humorous announcements that made the atmosphere more laid-back.
The flight took off and landed on schedule, and the cabin was clean. Really, that’s all I could hope for in a low-cost meal. Although I didn’t buy any food or beverages on board, I could have done so with a credit card.
Final Thoughts
To be honest, my experience flying with Spirit Airlines from Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport exceeded my expectations. The terminal itself is outdated in comparison to others, yet it works well for inexpensive, short-haul travel. Spirit’s boarding and check-in processes were quick and easy, the personnel were kind, and the flight left on schedule with no surprises or delays.
